Session 5 2024 Production Project

Intention (SMART Goal) for the Session

By May 10, as part of TEAM 4 as , I will have evidence of a speedy solo, faster than what I normally play by following this tutorial for Session 5.

PRE-PRODUCTION – INQUIRY

Leader(s) in the Field / Exemplary Work(s)

I grew up with this song, and the solo is always something that I thought was super cool, it was bluesy, had lots of emotion and added lots to the song without taking away from the other instruments and sections. It seemed almost like a section of the song or an interlude instead of a solo and I like that a lot.

Primary Source

Pentatonic box

Get fast at certain licks

The three licks are a pull off onto the next string, a hammer on lick, and then a sliding back and forth lick.

Secondary Source

Need to focus on both accuracy and speed, this don’t go hand in hand

Have to practice slow and practice fast

Open loop vs closed loop

As soon as base technique is good, go faster

Go faster than you can to push yourself

Mr Leduc, this is a very different take on speeding up, not sure how accurate it is but its cool. It kinda reminds me of like the working out mentality, you push yourself to the point of not being able to go any farther and try to go farther so that your brain works and focuses on that area.

Project Timeline

Production Milestones

  • Intro: March 22
  • Structure: March 29
  • Practiced to perfection: April 12

Post-production

  • Song recorded April 12/ April 19
  • Vocal Track April 19/ April 26
  • Rough mix April 19

Proposed Budget

Each hour of studio time is around $35 – $75. To record the one song we are writing this session it would probably add up around $50 maybe $100 but I don’t think we would need more than an hour.

LOGLINE

  • Fake people, people who pretend they are one thing but are in fact another, (probably having to do with politics such as people saying they support one thing while its just to gain more power)

PROTAGONIST

  • the criticizer of modern politics

PROTANGIONST CORE WOUND / MOTIVATION

  • United States politics (if you know you know ( I hope you know)).

GENRE

  • Prog Metal, metal core

INFLUENCES and EXAMPLES

  • Tool, Sleep Token, American Government, Motionless in White

PLOT DESCRIPTION (FILM) (Ik I was supposed to delete this but bear with me)

  • Not really if there is gonna be a plot per say. But I think the main idea is that this criticism falls on deaf ears and in the end no one in power actually cares about any sort of criticism.

Audio Terms and Definitions

  • Sound Wave
    • A vibrational disturbance that involves the mechanical motion of molecules transmitting energy from one place to another.
  • Compression
    • Reducing a signal’s output level in relation to its input level to reduce dynamic range.
  • Frequency
    • The # of times per second that a sound source vibrates, is expressed in hertz (Hz).
  • Hertz
    • Unit of measurement of frequency; numerically equal to cycles per second (cps).
  • Infrasonic
    • The range below the frequencies is audible to human hearing.
  • Ultrasonic
    • The range above the frequencies of human hearing.
  • Pitch
    • The subjective perception of frequency – the highness or lowness of a sound.
  • Fundamental
    • The lowest frequency a sound source can produce. In other words, it is also called the first harmonic or primary frequency which is the lowest, or basic, pitch of a musical instrument.
  • Sound Frequency Spectrum
    • The range of frequencies audible to human hearing: about 20 to 20,000 Hz.
  • Octave
    • The interval between the two frequencies that have a tonal ratio of 2:1.
  • Bass
    • The low range of the audible frequency spectrum; is usually from 20 to 320 Hz.

  • Treble
    • The frequency range between roughly 5,120 Hz and 20,000 Hz, the highest two octaves audible to human hearing in the sound frequency spectrum.
  • Equalization
    • A signal-processing device that can boost, attenuate, or shelve frequencies in a sound source or sound system.
  • Amplitude
    • The magnitude of a sound wave or an electric signal is measured in decibels.

What I Learned & Problems I Solved

  • I learned that with dynamic microphones you really need the microphone pretty close to the person otherwise it is very quiet. A problem that we solved was I couldn’t figure out how to end the recording on the audio device. I ended up having to ask Connor so I cite him as my source.

Guitar

Intention (SMART Goal)

By March 1, as part of TEAM 2 as Guitarist, I will have evidence of writing a spacy ebow solo part by following this ebow tutorial for Session 4.

PRE-PRODUCTION – INQUIRY

Leader(s) in the Field / Exemplary Work(s)

Radiohead is known for the experimentation with both styles, and instrumentation, the Ebow they use for in this song background parts to create atmosphere, while this isn’t what I am going for in my use of one, it is cool inspiration for the future

Secondary Source

Radiohead while using usually similar instruments in there music through arrangement they create unique and varying songs throughout there music. In this video Listening In analyzes the instrumentation of the song “How to disappear completely”. While you may expect the bass part to be rooting the rest of the instruments, in this song it does not, it has its own melody.

SMART Goal Milestone Schedule

We will have a rough recording of our song by the end of next week and we will record the final version of the song by the last week of the session. I don’t want to over plan the songwriting, we have a way to write music, and its usually just where it takes us instead of we are going to figure out this part specifically.

POST-PRODUCTION – REFLECTION

21st Century Skills

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

We wrote a song around specific guidelines that we gave ourself

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

We had a lot of differing opinions on certain ways the song was going to go. We had to talk it out.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

We had to use Garageband and also I was using a Ebow and had to learn how to use it.

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

I have gotten better at guitar, especially more intricate or difficult piecse

Reactions to the Final Version

Keith said that we should work on the transition from when we all drop out and it is just Connor

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

The recording was very rough and since then we have added a lot to the song.

Intention (SMART Goal)

By Oct. 12, as part of team # as the Guitarist, I will have evidence of Learning “The Pot” By Tool by following this UG Tutorial for Session 1.

PRE-PRODUCTION – INQUIRY

Leader(s) in the Field / Exemplary Work(s)

Maynard James Keenan (its not a video sorry)

Being a musician is not the only part of his life, many musicians have other hobbies or parts of their lives. Maynard James Keenan is in 3 bands, Tool, Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. Maynard James Keenan says each different band he is in he approaches making music an entirely different way. He is a very reactive musician that adds his part after everything else is done.

POST-PRODUCTION – REFLECTION

21st Century Skills

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

We were innovative this session because of our dipping into strange time signatures. We had a hard time figuring the time signatures out, but we ended up doing it.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

Communication was vital to get the difficult time signatures down especially when each of us are doing different things.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

We had troubles with out set up in the beginning but we figured it out in the end and now we know how to set up a system like we used in the future

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

We have been playing gigs around town, and potentially wanting to make this a career if at all possible. And if not continue playing music anyway.

Reactions to the Final Version

Keith said he really liked the duel solo that me and Connor had

April said that the high end on the bass was an issue because it clashed with the guitar.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

I am fairly happy with the song, I feel like the solo section was a bit rough and we were out of tune. But I am happy with the structure of the song and how it sounds.

LinkedIn recommendation

You rarely find someone as dedicated and self-directed as Aiden. Aiden and I were students in a Game Design class at Capital High School in Olympia Washington. When we were learning how to code in Unity, even during the hardest of projects, Aiden figured out how to do it. Apart from being an exceptionally hard worker, Aiden is a joy to be around and a super funny guy without getting in the way of work. Aiden in any group situation would be a solid choice, he is a hard-working self director/learner, that will always get what you need done
